This painting was inspired by a photograph I took of my brother in-law and his grandson (John and Nathan), on the dock at Brown's Bay Resort, Vancouver Island.  A special moment in time was captured and these images could be of many a grandpa with their grandchild; while the sun shines warm on their skin, inhaling fresh salt air and enjoying time together exploring nature on our beautiful west coast.

BCP 45 (Nautical) BCP 45

The BCP 45 was built in 1927 as a table seiner for BC Packers and her image was on the back of the Canadian five dollar bill between 1972 and 1986.  The BCP 45 was also an exhibit at Expo 86 in Vancouver, BC.  After 68 years of service as a salmon seiner, troller, gillnetter, beam trawler and tow-off for the winter herring, the BCP45 now resides where she was restored at the Maritime Heritage Centre in Campbell River, BC.  On September 17th, 2005 the Government of Canada designated the fishing boat BCP45 as a National Historic Site.
I painted her in memory of my Grandfather Robert (Bud) Haines, Great Uncles Dayton and Buford Haines and with great respect to the fishermen that sailed her and the folks that restored her.

The Cape Mudge Lighthouse is located on the southern tip of Quadra Island across from the City of Campbell River, B.C., Canada and it marks the southern entrance to Discovery Passage.  The current lighthouse was built in 1916, it is a 42 foot high octagonal structure built with reinforced concrete.

It brings me fond memories as a child waking up on a foggy or snowy morning to the sound of the fog horn and viewing its beauty from across the water for many years.

The Fisgard Lighthouse is a National Historic Site, built in 1860, it was the first permanent lighthouse on Canada's west coast.  Fisgard Lighthouse has lit the way for mariners to Royal Roads anchorage, Esquimalt Harbour and it's navel base, and points the way to Victoria Harbour.  The Fisgard Lighthouse is located at 603 Fort Rodd Hill Road, Victoria, BC, Canada.

As a Vancouver Island resident born and raised, I've always had a love for lighthouses and find it fitting that I should paint the oldest one on the west coast first.
